Information about stage 30: Stage from Vilalba to Baamonde
STAGE 30 |
KM 20.7 |
TIME It take 4 to 6 hours if you walk it in one day |
Itinerary
After leaving the town, the first milestone, which marks 120 kilometers and 999 meters to Santiago, takes us along a paved track to cross a river whose bed is covered with vegetation. Then we will pass (it is a provisional detour) under the highway bridge and we will go to the Rodríguez Bridge over the Trimaz River. Here is the only slope of the day after which we will arrive after a few kilometers of Galician foliage to San Xoan de Alba, at the foot of the N-634. You have to continue along this road for a few meters and leave it on the right to continue along parallel paths to A torre. We will cross the national road and we will advance parallel to its left to cross it again at Casa Alejandro and later pass under the highway. Then comes another bridge, this time the Saa bridge over the Labrada river , located on the old road that linked Vilalba with Parga and Sobrado dos Monxes. Next we will find an unsignposted detour due to highway works. If you continue, pay attention: it is to the left, under the tunnel. We will cross the N-634 again and along paved tracks we will arrive at the Pigara Parish indicator , where the marker indicating 108,458 kilometers to Santiago is located. We will continue in the direction of Ferreira and after this town we will go out again to the national road, at kilometer 638 and at the height of a gas station. Along the shoulder of the road and 50 meters before reaching kilometer 639 we turn off onto a path on the left that leads us back to the national highway. After passing under the A-6 bridge we will enter Baamonde , a town in the Begonte council and the end of the trip for today.
Difficulties
-
Departure from Vilalba:
It seems that the signage in the large towns is lame a bit. From the hostel we enter Vilalba through the main street and when we reach a street where it indicates LV-118 in the direction of Viveiro / As Pontes, we must turn right and immediately left through the first street. It is the 10th street, where we will find metal shells on the ground. We go out to Plaza Santa María and then we take Rúa Concepción Arenal.
- For the rest, a pleasant and short stage, with little asphalt and a marked rural character.
Observations
Short stage that can be extended without major complications if desired, so that in the stage that ends in Sobrado there is no need to cover a kilometer. There are different options if you do not want to sleep in Baamonde, either extend the stage to the Witericus private hostel in Carballedo, to the A Lagoa hostel in the town of the same name or to Miraz. Thus doing the stage from Vilalba in 30.4, 34.2 and 36.1 kilometers respectively.
What to see, what to do
Baamonde is a very well located town belonging to the Begonte City Council. Right at the entrance the N-634 meets the N-6 and passes the highway that connects Madrid and La Coruña, the A-6. It is a small town of about 300 inhabitants that celebrates its festivities on September 11, the day of the Virgen del Rosario de Baamonde.

The parish church of Santiago:
It is the most famous monument in the council of Begonte. In front of the church there is a triple transept from the s. XVIII and a chestnut tree carved inside with a sculpture by Víctor Corral. Near the church are the remains of the old Amarante fortress destroyed by the Irmandiños.
