Located in lower Manhattan, at the intersection of Broadway and Park Avenue, Union Square is arguably New York’s best-known intersection after Times Square. With its park, its monuments and the many restaurants and shops in the surrounding area, Union Square is a place not to be missed if you go visit New York in 5 days or more.
What To Do And See In Union Square?
Union Square is one of the most central places in New York. This square, inaugurated in 1839, has occupied an important place in the history of the city, and even of the country. It is for example here that in 1861, during the Civil War, a large gathering of patriots took place. Since then, many political and religious demonstrations have taken place in Union Square, on numerous occasions.
Today, Union Square is a pedestrian plaza best known for the park it houses at its center, Union Square Park. This park is one of the nicest places to relax if you govisit Manhattan : it attracts many street artists, and there are several monuments such as an equestrian statue of George Washington and statues of Gandhi, Lafayette and Abraham Lincoln.

- Union Square Green market is an outdoor organic market where you can find fresh produce such as dairy products, vegetables, and even flowers, sold by local producers. Finding such a typical little market right at the foot of the tall buildings and busiest streets of New York is always surprising. This market opens several times a week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
- The Union Square Holiday Market is one of New York’s main Christmas markets. Every year from mid-November to the end of December, many artisans come to set up their stalls here. During this period, Union Square is one of the best places to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in New York
All around Union Square, you can find several of the most important streets in New York in which there are many big name stores, but also a large number of restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines.
How Do I Get To Union Square?
To get to this iconic intersection of Manhattan, you can take the subway on lines 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R and W, and simply get off at the 14st-Union Square station.
The crossroads is also accessible by bus, taking lines M1, M2 or M3.
